Daniel
Goleman’s book, "Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter
more than IQ" was a number one bestseller in the mid 1990s. And,
research has continued to support the importance of what has become
known as EQ – emotional competencies.
EQ focuses on our ability to recognise, understand and choose how we think, feel
and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves.
Knowing one's own emotions and controlling them, recognising emotions in others
and managing them, self-motivation and empathy are key dimensions of EQ.
